Child Death Overview Panel (CDOP) Sub-group
All LSCBs are required by law to have suitable CDOP arrangements in place.
The main aim of the CDOP's work is to understand the reasons for a child's death and to consider any wider lessons to be learnt about how best to safeguard and promote children's welfare in the future. In reviewing child deaths, CDOP uses whatever information is available from all those involved in the care of a child both before and immediately after the death and from other sources such as the Coroner.
The arrangements include:
- A rapid response by a group of key professionals who come together for the purpose of enquiring into and evaluating each unexpected death of a child
- An overview of all child deaths (under 18 years, excluding those babies who are still born)
- Identifying any wider public health or safety concerns arising from a particular death or pattern of deaths
- Reporting to the LSCB any patterns or trends in the local data including an annual report
